Jessica at New River Arts & Fiber gave me an incredible opportunity to paint her front windows at her store in Blacksburg, Virginia. The lettering was already in place, but there were two large blank pieces of glass that I could have fun with. Jessica gave me a lot of freedom to come up with an idea, but we landed on it being seasonal window together. It is a temporary space where Arts & Fiber will be giving to other artists in the future. Given that this was glass, I opted to use acrylic, which was also a new medium for me.
The imagery is of my parents’ house, specifically my mom’s Homestead. Her grandfather built the house. Her father was born there, and she was born there. I have lived there as well. When I think of winter, I think of this house. I’ve probably visited or lived in it every winter of my life. The mailboxes have been there, I’ve pulled (and put) many pieces of mail in them. My mom always decorates the house for winter, you can see the candles in the window as you come over the hill towards it at night. She also took the picture that I used for inspiration and reference.
Take a peak on Main Street in downtown Blacksburg if you happen by this winter. Maybe take a picture next to it and tag me on IG @paulvivier .
